August 16th PCA-CWR DE at Mission Raceway

Postby Owain » Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:26 pm

This year has proved challenging for the PCA – Canada West Region Driver Education program, as we have lost our long-standing partner, Proformance Racing. However, your DE committee has now retained Driving Unlimited to carry out a PCA-CWR Driver Education event at Mission Raceway on Monday August 16th, 2010. Cost for the event is $235 plus HST, which includes a catered lunch. On-line registration is NOW OPEN for PCA members through the PCA-CWR website (http://www.pca-cwr.org). Please note that non-PCA participants will be invited to register after July 18th. Registration deadline is August 2nd.

All levels of drivers are welcome!! Loaner helmets will be available free of charge. We will have 3 run groups (Novice / Intermediate / Advanced), and space will be limited to 15 drivers per group. This will ensure lots of open track for everyone. Our new format with Driving Unlimited also provides a staggering 6 run sessions for each driver!! Professional instruction will be provided by Driving Unlimited.

In addition, we would like to encourage our Novice and Intermediate drivers to attend the Driving Unlimited / BMW Club of BC Driver’s Skills event at the Pitt Meadows autocross facility the day before our event, on Sunday August 15th. The BMW Club has graciously agreed to allow our members to register for this event along with their own members. Spaces are limited, and are available on a first-come basis. Please register for the Driver’s Skills event through the BMW Club of BC website (http://www.bmwccbc.org). This will be an excellent way to prepare yourself for our Driver Education event on August 16th!

Registration is open now for non-members, so if you have some non-member friends who are interested then point them over here. Also if you're sitting on the fence about registering make sure you sign up soon or you risk losing your chance.

If you have any questions please let me know. I hope to see lots of you out on the track.

Not sure if any of you remember me. I came to a couple auto cross events last year, a silver vw gti. Anyways I have signed up for the event as a complete novice. A break fluid flush is necessary before the track day correct? What time should we show up to the track?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

We're looking forward to seeing you out there. A brake fluid flush is a good idea, especially if you don't know when it was done last. Your brakes will get quite hot at Mission and new fluid will deal with that heat much better than older fluid. The last thing you want is decreased braking ability when you need it most.

The gates should be open at about 7am, so you'll want to be there close to that time so that there's time to go through tech inspection and get yourself organized. There will be an e-mail sent to all participants closer to the day with all the details, though, so you'll know where you need to be when.

If this streak of fantastic weather holds, and it looks like it's going to, it's going to be a great day to hang out at the track.

This is from that other forum, but it is hilarious and should be required viewing for all DE participants.

Kudos to PCW - CWR and Driving Unlimited for the DE today. Special thanks to Adrian for the extra attention, much appreciated. Still so much to learn and practice. ;)

Yesterday was a great first time at the track. That is going to be very addictive. Thanks to the PCA'ers that organized the event and kudos to the instructors from Driving Unlimited. They were great with their instructions and feedback and I was faster and faster and faster as the day progressed as a result.

Biggest things learned / re-learned and practiced were 1) Looking way ahead to where I want to go and letting my hands follow my eyes and 2) starting my acceleration as I am unwinding my turn out of the corner, that made a big difference to the speed I was able to carry in to the straights.

Funny thing is that when I got home my wife asked me how fast I was going and I did not have a clue. Not once did I look at my speedometer, it was all about the revs (which even though I watched it I managed to hit the rev limiter more than once) Probably just got too excited :o

Turn 2 and turn 8 / 9 are the ones I need to work on even though at first I thought they would be the easier ones with their longer sweeping corners. Turn 3 and then 4 5 and 6 in combination were the most fun

Can't wait to do it again
